Career EventsEnhancing your career prospects
With Ramsay Society, your exposure to industry is increased. This is done through company visits, field trips, and plenty of career and networking events. Have a look at the calendar on our homepage to see what is coming up.
Shell Industrial Events
Most recently, our society hosted two inter-connected Shell events, contemplating the Powering Progress and Net-Zero Strategy developed by Shell, with the goal of reaching Net-Zero emissions across their energy portfolio by 2050. To the event we welcomed Ben Taylor, Strategy Manager for the Energy Transition Implementation. During this 1-hour open Q&A session, Computer Scientists, Mechanical Engineers, and Chemical Engineers, had the opportunity to discuss with Ben and Jack Powell the challenges arising with the management of Scope 3 emissions, the means through which data analytics can be harnessed and employed towards optimising the energy transition, the importance of a nature-based business strategy (promoting carbon offsetting, alongside the growing importance of carbon credits and trading), and finally the growing trend towards sustainable aviation fuels within the UK. This talk harnessed extensive discussions on business strategy and the importance of engineering and data science for the successful implementation of the energy transition and the Shell Power Progress initiative. Ramsay Career Fair and Speed Networking The event consists of presentations detailing company roles, recruitment details and student opportunities from several chemical processing companies including KBR, Exxonmobil, Air products and MWH Global. After this the students get the chance to network with the experts and ask any questions. Annual Debate The annual debate looked at bringing students in the department together with members of industry, politics and academia to discuss a topic of interest within the world of chemical engineering. Company Presentations Presentations and workshops from various engineering companies offering valuable insight into opportunities available, application advice and an opportunity to ask questions directly to recruiters and/or current graduate employees Industry Trips Trips organised by the society to see theory in action. Last year we visited the Drax Power Station in Yorkshire and this year includes a possible trip to a Nuclear Power reactor. |
Social EventsMore than just Mass Balances!
Because your university experience is just not based on academics, we are also here to ensure you get both work and play during your time at UCL. We hold several socials and events (sometimes with other Engineering societies), ensuring you make plenty of friends with similar interests to yours.
Ramsay Society Hackathon
Over the past two years, the Ramsay Society has developed and hosted the First Year Hackathon, a three-day departmental event. The event boasts extensive participation from industry judges, with previous iterations hosting guest judges and speakers from Beyond Meats, Jellatech, and Food Forward Ltd, all of whom are leading specialists within Chemical Engineering, finance, and biosciences. Our panel of judges also comprises leading academics, who assess and provide feedback to the team’s 5-minute elevator pitches. During the pandemic year of 2020, our first iteration of the Hackathon had over 59 students engaging online, with a further 42 engaging in 2021. During the first edition of the Hackathon, the research question covered the broad scope of “overcoming the challenges facing fossil fuel alternatives”. During the Hackathon students analysed a diverse range of innovations from vanadium flow batteries and machine learning models for wind energy forecasting and optimisation, to Perovskites solar cells for electric vehicles, alongside the future of hydrogen supply-chain logistics within the United Kingdom. Ramsay Halloween Party First event of the year, welcoming you back to an exciting year ahead. At the Halloween Party, there is the opportunity to dress up and have fun, all while mingling with other Chemical Engineering students at all stages in their degrees. Frank Morton Sports Day 'Frank Morton' is an annual inter-university sports day which brings together over 2000 Chemical Engineering students from across the UK to compete in various sports categories. Every year, it is hosted by different universities, so Ramsay Society goes together to have a blast while competing for UCL! Ramsay Society Dinner The annual departmental dinner attended by Chemical Engineering alumni, current students, and past and present staff celebrating the achievements and toasting the success of students and staff across the department. Pub Crawls & Quizzes Ramsay Society plans crawls and quizzes throughout the year, to give students a well-deserved break between all the hard work. Engineering Ball or Boat Party To celebrate all the students' hard work throughout the academic year, Ramsay Society joins UCL Engineering Society in an annual ball, for a glamorous night enjoyed by all Engineering students at UCL. |
